Here is a guide for anyone who lives in what I call a "toxic zone"...a place where constant exhaust fumes and toxins are released into the air where they live. These toxins are constantly being processed out of your body by your liver - your liver is pretty much the most important organ in your body when it comes to keeping you toxin free. It's the filter of your body, so you have to make sure it's in good working order.
1) Try to live by a moving body of water - for instance, if you live in Manhattan, try to live on the edges next to the water. Clean air will be more abundant. Clean air is really important to your health, stagnant toxin filled air will lead to disease. When I first moved to Manhattan I was living in the East Village which actually does get a good amount of clean air being next to a moving body of water. In Astoria, Queens I was also located quite close to water and visited a park every week that was next to a moving body of water. It was when I moved to Park Slope/Gowanus Brooklyn that I became ill with walking pneumonia, and then in Woodside, Queens that I experienced high levels of pesticides that sent me to the ER. Both of these areas do not have air directly coming off of the water.
2) get a HEPA air purifier for your bedroom and sleep with it on at night. When you are sleeping, your body processes these toxins out of your body. If you are constantly breathing polluted air, you body never recovers if it also breathes it all night. The HEPA air filter will go a long way to preserving your health.
3) do Sauna/Steamroom often. The heat causes your organs to release accumulated toxins. Do it especially if you have had a couple of drinks the night before, it will get the stuff out of your liver. Exercise and sweating also accomplishes this. Exercise and do sauna as often as you can, and drink plenty of high quality water, never tap water which contains chlorine, flouride and other chemicals that can throw off healthy intestinal flora. Don't believe the hype that NYC's water is good - it really isn't! Distilled water isn't great either - get pure spring water, or better yet, a reverse osmosis system for your apt that filters out ALL toxins.
4) consume lots of green vegetables, fruits and vegetables in general, FRESH vegetable and fruit juices (NOT bottled or concentrated because the sugar actually PREVENTS your liver from processing toxins out), and especially the BITTER greens like Dandelions. In addition, take your multivitamin each day and make sure it has all the B vitamins which your liver uses to process toxins. Don't overload your organs by OVER taking vitamins, just take the reccomended amount.
5) do not allow spraying in your apartment or live around mold or any funiture, paint or cabinetry that is rotting or "offgassing" high Volatile Organic Compounds. Newer paint and furniture tends to do this, in addition to brand new carpeting which can have pesticides and flame retardants in it. Try to make your apt into your non-toxic haven. If you suspect mold or pesticide, there are self test kits at Home Depot or online that you can use to find out the levels in your apt. Use all natural products to deal with pests - for instance, instead of mouse baits, we used a humane electric mousetrap and were able to clear all the rodents from our apt in Brooklyn. Keep the place clear of dust and other irritating substances and use your air filter every night.
