I have been trying again and again to call an agent who had listed a particularly cheap property that I had my eye on. I couldn't reach her, apparently she is busy with clients from morning till night - so I went and eyeballed the property myself without her.
It turned out to be much farther from the city than the ad implied, and in addition was sloped and heavily wooded, so it would require a lot of work. It was also in a subdivision. I'm pretty sure that the rules of a subdivision will prevent me from doing the things I want to do with the land such as build Tiny Houses, live in one or an RV while I save money, run a business on the location, etc. But i just wanted to ask her some questions and find out if she had other properties that maybe were not in a subdivision where some of these activities could take place.
I had shared some of my plans with her partner on the phone, and I was constantly assured that she would call me back. But she didn't. I began to realize that I might not be the best customer in her eyes. I'm not interested in a mortgage. Nor am I interested in purchasing an existing structure, I just want land, and commercially zoned land at that. And cash on the barrelhead. I'm not sure how these agents work - I assumed that because she would be getting her fee for hooking me up with the property that she would be interested in me as a customer no matter what I want to do. Now I'm not so sure. Her partner expressed doubt that I would be able to do what I planned. Why? If I have the money to purchase the land, why on Earth would I not be able to follow through with the rest of my plans? It's this kind of prejudice against people who are not on the mainstream track of what others think they SHOULD be doing that really pisses me off. Is there some reason why I wouldn't be able to purchase my land outright? Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to hook up with property that is commercially zoned? If not, then why the doubts? Because to her, what I SHOULD be doing is getting a mortgage for a single family home - not purchasing commercially zoned property outright. I SHOULD be locking myself in for that 30 years, right? This is BS btw. I can do whatever I freakin feel like doing. No matter what kind of property I feel like purchasing and no matter what business I feel like putting on my land, it's nobody's business. She also didn't like the fact that she tried to hook me up with a rental, and I proved to her during our conversation that I had a better deal staying right where I was and didn't want the disadvantages of a rental right now. In her mind, I SHOULD be looking to get the next crappy rental that comes down the pipe instead of figuring out a better deal. Because that's what most people, especially women, do - right? They stay under a landlord's thumb until they can get under a bank's thumb, and they only get out from under the bank a few years before they are ready to croak. Well that's not me. I am a born businesswoman who is absolutely allergic to bad deals, has had enough of them, and is ready to progress to the next stage of my business life.
So how do you get beyond short sighted people disturbing your ability to go on your chosen path? You go around them of course. I decided that instead of using an agent, I will approach owners myself and make offers. The last thing I need is some person who pushes their opinion of what it is that I'm doing in where it doesn't belong. If you are just an agent, nobody solicited your opinion of what it is they would like to do. You do not get to have input into wether or not you think the person will be able to do what they would like to do. You're not a business consultant, you are an agent and your job is simply to sell properties, not give opinions.
I came to realize that these agents do not LIKE what it is that I want to do - manufacture affordable housing and create a cluster community of affordble housing for artists. Why would people who benefit from sellling unaffordable housing like a person who is going to dismantle their whole game? Every time someone gets locked into a life-destroying mortgage, they get paid. They really don't care that what they are doing is hurting people, nor have they thought about it. Their world view has already been formed into place and they do not want to help someone who is going to change it. To them, you get that mortgage and suffer under it, paying a bank money for usury practically your whole life. What is this crazy talk about not doing that? LOL That must be crazy talk, right? Except for the fact that millions of USA Citizens are choosing this path right now, and I am helping them along.
